Step 3: Set Your Goals

Goals are best defined as a “dream with a deadline”. They are the accomplishments you would like to achieve in a given time frame. They can be short or long term, the key is that they are SMART.

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely

Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. It is best to consider the who, what, when, where and whys.

Measurable: Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. Measuring your progress helps you stay on track and reach your targets.

Attainable: When you identify goals that are important to you, you can figure out ways to make them come true. You can attain most any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps.

Realistic: A realistic goal is one in which you are able and willing to work towards. A goal can be both high and realistic; you just have to determine how high your goals should be

Timely: A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency to get it done. When you anchor a goal with a time frame your mind unconsciously starts to work on its completion.

The steps you have taken so far are all a part of the decision making process. Starting with self awareness and moving on to research provides you with the information you need to allow you to set the SMART goal(s) you would like to accomplish. If you have come up with several options, using the career roadmap can help you determine which option is best suited for you.
