PEI Policy Hackathon
In 2018, Policy Hack: Design. Build. Change. was the first competition of its kind in the province designed to generate real ideas and real solutions to policy challenges. Continuing in an annual tradition, the event teams together public servants from across federal, provincial and municipal governments and the private sector to create solutions to real-world issues affecting government with the end goal of presenting their findings to a panel of judges and creating an impact in government. This five-week event was the result of a partnership between the Province of Prince Edward Island, Veterans Affairs Canada, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Startup Zone.
This year's winning team came up with a great solution to a problem put forward by the Department of Education and Life Long Learning on how to improve on student well being teams.
The winning Team Nikodim Broukhanski (Health PEI), Lennie MacPherson (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency), Alexandra Shaw (Veterans Affairs Canada), Lynn Trainor (Island Regulatory Affairs Commission) being recognized came up with a great solution to a problem put forward by the Department of Education and Life Long Learning on balancing privacy and consent with early access to the new student well being teams. Their coaches, Kathleen Brennan, from the Department of Environment, Water and Climate Change, and Andrew Trivett, from the University of Prince Edward Island, provided mentorship and advice to the team throughout the five-week competition.
Engagement and Collaboration Award
The Engagement and Collaboration Award recognizes a contribution to government and citizens of PEI through meaningful engagement with the public and/or cross departmental collaboration with relevant stakeholders and /or partners resulting in a positive impact.
The Policy Hackathon Planning Team (Kathleen Brennan, Jeff Collins, Patrick Farrar, Maria MacAulay, Wendy MacDonald, Allison MacDougall, Shannon Pratt, Alaina Roache O'Keefe) were the recipients of this year's award. Kathleen Brennan accepted the award on behalf of the team.
