Navigating New Workplace Challenges: Remote Work, Social Media, and Accommodation Requests

Length: 2.5 hours

The workplace continues to evolve, and with it come new challenges and responsibilities for managers and supervisors. This session will explore some emerging HR trends including: remote work arrangements, employee off-duty social media use, and support animal accommodation requests. Even if you are not currently facing these issues, the discussion will provide valuable insight into your management rights and how you can balance employee needs with organizational requirements. By understanding these trends, you’ll be better equipped to make informed decisions and strengthen your management practices. The learning objectives for this session are:

  • Remote Work: Whether remote work is a right or a privilege; under what circumstances employers can require employees to return to the office or remain remote; and the legal framework governing remote work, including employer discretion, contractual rights, and human rights accommodations.
  • Social Media Use: What amounts to improper off-duty social media use; the employers’ right to monitor public social media; and when employers can discipline employees for off-duty social media use.
  • Support Animal Accommodation Requests: The legal framework surrounding accommodation requests involving support animals, including what documentation an employer can request, and how to balance employee needs with workplace safety and operational requirements.
