Length: 2.5 hours
This presentation provides managers and supervisors with practical guidance on identifying, responding to, and managing drug, alcohol, and medication-related issues in the workplace. It will review the legal and workplace obligations that apply when an employee may not be fit for work, with a particular focus on the employer's Drug, Alcohol and Medication Policy. Participants will learn about their responsibilities when there are reasonable grounds to suspect impairment, including how to respond appropriately, involve Human Resources, and take immediate steps to protect workplace safety. The session will also address voluntary disclosure, post-incident considerations, and the distinction between discipline and accommodation.
The presentation will further explore the employer's duty to accommodate employees with substance use disorders or medication-related impairments, including how accommodation obligations intersect with safety-sensitive roles and operational requirements. Managers and supervisors will gain a clearer understanding of how to balance safety, accommodation, and accountability when dealing with drugs and alcohol in the workplace.
