Employee Engagement Survey

What is employee engagement?

Employee Engagement is the extent to which individuals find their work meaningful and energizing and feel inspired, proud and attached to their organization and their work. 1 The Public Service Commission has administered the Employee Engagement Survey approximately every two years since 2008.

Why are my responses to the Survey important?

By answering the questions in this survey, your department will be able to build on its strengths and address the challenges that you identify in your answers. Your feedback on your job and workplace will help shape the future of the Public Service: supporting the growth of the province through healthy, engaging, inclusive workplaces that we’re proud to contribute to.

The information from the survey provides department management teams with a great opportunity to meet with employees and discuss how to best respond to the findings.

Is my response to the survey anonymous?

Your responses are anonymous. Results are shared as a group for each work unit, and demographic details are only reported at the corporate level.  The survey results are analyzed by a statistician in the Department of Finance.

Are there corporate initiatives to encourage employee engagement?

After each employee engagement survey, results are reviewed and a response is developed both corporately and within each Department. The links below provide more information on the corporate response to recent surveys.

Can you tell me more about the recent surveys?

PSC administered several short “pulse” surveys in 2021, 2022, and 2023 instead of the traditional 60 question survey. Pulse surveys are shorter in length and based on themes that provide useful information on several facets of engagement at a department level. The first one was focused on Mental Health and Wellness; the second was focused on Diversity and Inclusion. This third survey was centered around concepts of working remotely, flexible workplaces, and your experiences with leadership as a civil service employee. The results of the survey series were used to measure employee engagement within our public service. The last traditional survey was in 2018.
